Location of Pencader Cemetery

A clear set of directions to Pencader Presbyterian Church, which adjoins Pencader Cemetery, has been put on the web by the Delaware Repeater Association (to which I have no affiliation). Directions can also be obtained from online map services such as Yahoo Maps and MapQuest; the ZIP+4 value "19702-3903" will retrieve the correct location from each of these resources.
Address: Pencader Presbyterian Church, 2303 Glasgow Ave, Newark, DE 19702-3903

About this transcription

This is my first transcription. I have not determined if records exist with the church before starting the transcription. Rather, I prefer to do this as a 'physical inventory' then check against available records if possible. Once complete, I intend to migrate the transcription into the USGenWeb Tombstone Transcription Project.

Three tables are included below for transcription data: The information below relates the status of this transcription:
  • Total # headstone transcriptions = 21
  • Total # people represented = 25
  • Transcriptions conducted on 1) 20031109 (21 trans / 25 ppl).

Cemetery Layout

The cemetery and church sit adjacent to one another, though on separate parcels of land according to the New Castle County, DE eParcelView resource.
The church sits on Parcel # 1102600072. link to parcel details link to parcel map
The cemetery sits on Parcel # 1102600117. link to parcel details link to parcel map

I've prepared two diagrams based on the aerial photographs used in the parcel maps referenced above.
Also, I've prepared a crude Headstone Map that contains Code #'s for headstones mentioned in the tables below.

Transcription: Alphabetical Surname, Forename List

About the Table: "Stone Code" refers to an integer that is used to associate information between the tables shown here. It is also used to indicate a particular headstone in the Headstone Maps (see Area A Headstone Map). The symbol "-?-" in the table indicates missing information; "-?" after a word indicates that the word might not be correct; "-i" after a word indicates that the information shown has been inferred.

Transcription: Marker Condition List

About the Table: "Stone Code" refers to an integer that is used to associate information between the tables shown here. It is also used to indicate a particular headstone in the Headstone Maps (see Area A Headstone Map). Available values for 'Marker Type': Pedestal ~ base on which a standing slab is affixed; Standing ~ standing slab emerging from the ground (Standing = Pedestal without a base); Inset ~ set into the ground so that the surface inscription is at ground level; Block ~ a solid block set into the ground (distinguish from Standing by the thickness and inscription position); Obelisk ~ base on which is set a spire. Avaiable values for 'Marker Conditions' (very subjective definitions): Mint ~ looks new even if it is not; Good ~ some wear and tear; Fair ~ substantial wear and tear; Poor ~ disintegrating (note that damage does not contribute to the Marker Condition, but should be documented by specifics).

About the Table: In each inscription recorded, lines of the original are separated by " :: ". Illegible words, phrases, and lines are indicated by "-?-", while potentially incorrect recorded words are indicated by "word-?". Notes in this table do not include comments on the condition of the stone; look for this information in the previous table.
